Gyms, health clubs and wellness facilities are everywhere and the decision
to join one can be overwhelming. Yet with a little research and keeping
some of our tips in mind you can find the perfect gym for your fitness
level and needs.
Before you get on the hunt, one of the first things you should consider
is what your overall goal is and what you expect from a fitness center.
A gym can be anything from a bare bones place to workout and shower to
a haven away from home where you can get massages, spa treatments and
relax after a few classes. Think carefully about your budget and make
a list of things you expect in a gym and things you’d like to have to
be prepared when you go out and look.
With that done, take that list and go and see what’s out there in your
area. Make sure to utilize gym trial passes to their fullest and experience
each gym a handful of times at different hours before making a decision.
If the gym gives you a bad feeling during the trial or getting to the
gym is a chore because of distance you may want to continue looking at
other options.
When you find the gym of your dreams, don’t be so quick to sign on the
dotted line. Make sure you’re getting the best deal you can. Check the
internet for coupons or special offers and give it a little time to see
if a better deal is posted. Often towards the end of the month sales staff
will give better deals to meet monthly quotas, so that may be a time to
cash in. Also, during a time of economic downturn, hesitating on the final
price might get a discount or two thrown in to the pot. Some gyms will
pressure customers into packages unfortunately so it’s important to remember
that ultimately THEY need YOUR business and while they might try to make
you feel otherwise, the only person losing anything in the deal is them
if it doesn’t work out. If a gym pushes too hard, again, you may want
to be looking for a different gym.
Once you get into a gym we’ll need to return to the list to figure out
where to head next. If all you need is a place to run and a shower you
might be all set, but being clear on the rules for the gym is a great
way to get introduced and feel more comfortable. Many gyms offer fitness
evaluations or trainer time as a part of their welcome package and these
are great opportunities to get your workout on the right path. These evaluations
can help get you set up and going with your basic fitness goals and instructions
on how best to utilize equipment for them.
Remember, a gym should be a comfortable place for you, a place you feel
motivated about returning to a few times a week and will motivate you
to continue. Never feel pressured into making the wrong choice. If you
find something that fits your needs you’ll be hitting the gym hard in
no time!
